CUSTOMER CASE
The NX also helps simplify other tasks for the technologist. Images
that are accidentally rejected can now be easily retrieved, and images
transferred into the wrong file are easily corrected. Images can be
exported onto CDs, rather than be printed. They can also be saved
on CDs without patient demographics, in order to create teaching
libraries of interesting cases or pathologies. The search function lets
users search by different requirements, such as hospital number,
session date, or examination type.
NX simplifies department administration
According to Andrew Featherstone, the NX system also provides
important benefits on the administrative side. A reject statistical
analysis tool allows management to monitor and analyze image
rejection rates, which in turn enables them to identify and address
the underlying causes. Dose monitoring ensures that the X-ray
rooms are delivering consistent amounts of radiation, to ensure
the ALARA principle is achieved. Queue management provides
a view of what the NX system is doing in real-time, i.e., what is
being archived, and what is printing on each printer. Enhanced
storage capability is another advantage. “With the previous system,
we could only store approximately seven day’s worth of radiology
images, due to the high volume of images we process every day,”
says Andrew Featherstone. “Now, we are able to store approximately
30 days.”
For the San’s technologists, the efficiency benefits of the NX are the
most compelling. “The system allows more than one technologist to use
it at once, so you can flip from patient study to patient study without
having to close a study, and you can have approximately 10 studies
open at one stage,” says Andrew Featherstone. “That increases the
workflow, so technologists are not waiting in a queue to review images,
they can really come and go as they want.”

The square marker function of
the NX system shows whether
an image has been flipped
– flagging accidental image
reversals.
NX can invert fluoroscopy
images so they show
black/white in the same
manner as X-rays –
helping radiologists who are
accustomed to viewing
images this way.
NX uses icons to show when
an image has been sent to
print, or archived – so users
know image status precisely.
