doing something they like and enjoy. “It used to be in care
homes that maybe only 25 per cent of residents would
take part in any kind of meaningful activity, but our goal
is to involve all residents in a variety of activities and our
recreationist do an individual and ongoing assessment of
the residents to determine what activities they would like
to participate in,” says Woodcox.
HIGH-TECH ACTIVITIES
Getting residents engaged so they can choose
to watch and listen to what they like is actively
encouraged. Examples include on-line video
streaming with You Tube and the home’s Snoezelen, a
mobile multi-sensory machine used to provide mood
lighting, sounds and music to stimulate the senses.
Every detail of a resident’s life is catered for and
special attention is given to diet. “We have a specific
food committee where we talk about food and what
the residents like,” says Woodcox. “We also have our
own dietician who works full time.”
