UILDING UPON ALMOST 450 COLLECTIVE
years of stem cell research experience and
just as many or more patents, the scientists at
Cellular Dynamics International are making
incredible strides in the use of human stem cell-
derived tissue cells as tools for drug discovery and
toxicity testing.
Established in 2004, Cellular Dynamics
International, or CDI, is the world’s largest producer
of fully functional human cells derived from induced
pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Stem cell research
has been ongoing for several decades, but it was
1998
when CDI co-founder Dr. James Thomson,
a University of Wisconsin developmental biologist
and a true pioneer in this field, became the first to
successfully isolate human embryonic stem cell (ESC)
lines from leftover eggs obtained from an in vitro
fertilization clinic.
This discovery revolutionized the way people
approached disease research and eventually
