EUROPEAN IMMIGRANTS
The caring nature of Macassa Lodge may well go back
to its roots. Hamilton is situated right on Lake Ontario
and during the 1840s many immigrants from Europe
arrived in the city, many of them weak and ill from
their experience on the ocean journey. They needed
to be quarantined before they were integrated into
the community.
A house was established for this purpose and
over the next 50 years or so it became a refuge for
people to go to with all types of ailments. Then as a
need arose for care homes for seniors, the house was
relocated to its present site in 1954.
Today, Macassa Lodge meets all the needs of its
residents through a variety of forward-thinking
programmes, engaging new technology and ensuring
that each individual has tailor-made services.
Activities are high on the list of priorities and
